“Holy Grounds”

St. Peter’s “Holy Grounds” seekers discussion series will take place monthly on Wednesday evenings, 7-9 pm on Sep. 15, Oct. 20, Nov. 17 and Dec. 15 at The Globe Coffee Lounge (around the corner from St. Peter’s, on 1st Avenue North, west of 5th Street).

Anyone interest in exploring what it means to be a Christian are invited to gather with Canon Jamie McElroy to discuss the big questions of Christianity, religion and spirituality. Topics will be chosen by the participants and could include questions like:

  • Why do we give the Bible such pride of place in our worship? Why aren’t other great literary and philosophical works accorded such status among Christians?
  • Do we really believe in miracles? Isn’t one person’s miracle another’s happy accident? And what about all those not-so-happy accidents? Why don’t we call those miracles?
  • If God is all good and all powerful, why do bad things happen to good people? And why do good things happen to bad people?

These conversations will offer an opportunity to do the hard and messy work of theology from the ground up—while sipping coffee, eating treats and getting to know one another. We probably won’t reach any definitive conclusions but we’ll have a good and edifying time trying—which is kind of what the U.S. Episcopal Church is all about. As Jamie likes to say, “The Episcopal Church: You’ve got questions… We’ve got questions!”
