Koran Burning at the Church Next Door

September 9, 2010

Check out this video from ABC News regarding the tiny congregation in Gainsville, Florida, where they plan to burn 200-some copies of the Koran this Saturday, September 11.

It’s infuriating–not only that it’s happening but that it’s getting so much attention all over the world. I mean: part of my job is to evangelize to attempt to spread the message of Jesus to those who might not know much about it or have an understandable but inaccurate impression of it. And in the imagination of people all over the world, this whole “Florida Church To Burn Koran” thing has somehow become an event indicative of the state of Florida, the United States and–worst of all–the Christian religion. Makes me ill to think about.

I feel particularly bad for that Methodist church that’s located right next door–the piece includes an interview with its pastor.

And check out all the wood they’ve got stockpiled for the big event. Boy…

    Jesus is bigger than this.

He is bigger than what Terry Jones is doing.

He is bigger than for us to become infuriated by or feel our ministry might be hindered by what Terry Jones is doing.

I’ve already had opportunities to calmly explain to people why Jesus isn’t like what people might otherwise think He is like based on what Terry Jones is doing.

So, I really do view this as a great opportunity to talk about what Jesus is really like. The facts are, most people had a whole bunch of misconceptions about Him before Terry Jones broke onto the scene and, at worst, this incident gives us one more misconception to deal with and, at best, presents us with an opportunity to enter into a discussion that might not otherwise have been there.
