Looking for Flipper, Killing the Rest

September 7, 2010

In my sermon this past Sunday, I made reference to last year’s Best Documentary Oscar winner, “The Cove,” and in particular, I discussed the movie’s portrayal of Ric O’Barry and his work to expose the capture and slaughter of dolphins. Here’s a short clip from the film that shows the round-up of dolphins to be captured or slaughtered in Taiji, Japan. It also includes O’Barry’s description of how he went from being the world’s premiere trainer of dolphins–as the trainer of the five dolphins who performed as “Flipper” in 1960s TV show–to becoming the world’s premiere activist working to free dolphins from captivity.
